November 2022 – Exhibit of Members Work

July 15 - 19 2019 - Demo and Sale
Members mounted a small sale and demonstrated spinning  and weaving at Scott Manor House in Bedford.

August 2018 – Exhibit of Members Work

October 2017 – Maritime Spinners Retreat
ASH hosted the Spinners Retreat this year. It took place in the Marriott Dartmouth

August 2015 – Exhibit of Members Work

March 2013 – Fibre in Everyday Life Exhibit
Over 24 members submitted pieces to this exhibit which took place in the Chase Room of the Nova Scotia Archives. We had 10 categories and 1st, 2nd and 3rd ribbons for each category. Details

October 13, 2012 – Nocturne
We put on an event for Nocturne which is a city-wide art festival. We were situated in front of the Mary Black Gallery and had illuminated spinning wheels and a giant inkle loom covered in fairy lights. Various members participated during the 6 hour event (6pm – midnight).

September 2011 – Jane Stafford Workshop
We sponsored a 3 day workshop on the “Principles of Colour & Design in Handweaving”. It took place on September 16 – 18, 2011 at the NSCCD space on Marginal Road.

August 2011 – Norman Kennedy Spinning Workshop
We are sponsored a 1 day spinning workshop with the master spinner. It took place on August 8 at the Woodlawn Public Library.

2010 – Guild of Canadian Weavers Newsletter Samples
A group of 8 ASH members provided samples for the 2010-2011 issues of the GCW Newsletter. They chose a theme – Mary E. Black’s samples for the GCW Master Weaver Certificate – wove 4 different samples and wrote 6 articles about the samples and Mary E. Black.

2007 - Mary E. Black Digital Collection The guild undertook to further promote and expose the Collection to the public. This included helping NSARM digitize the textile samples. We are now working on developing full descriptions of the samples to associate with each image. This ongoing work can be viewed at https://novascotia.ca/archives/black/

17 members exchanged tea towels with the Lakeshore Weavers in Quebec

12 members participated in “Fibre in the Fall” Show and Sale at Sign of the Whale in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia

The Guild organized an exhibit of members’ work at Scott Manor House in Bedford on August 10 – 16

2000 – 30th Anniversary
The Guild celebrated its 30th anniversary on June 6 with a dinner at the Sheraton Halifax. And ended the year with November 25-26 Sale at Scott Manor House.

1998 – Exhibition
Guild participates in exhibition of handwoven yardage “A Celebration of Textiles” at the Mary E. Black Gallery March 12 – May 2

1998 – Donations to Bryony House
Every Christmas guild members have donated scarves, hats and mits to Bryony House, a shelter for abused women and children

1997 – Fibres East Conference
The Guild sponsored a 2 day conference in Cape Breton titled “Fibres East ’97″. Madelyn van der Hoogt was our guest instructor and taught 2 3-day workshops before and after the conference.

1995 – Mary E. Black Key to Weaving Collection
Mary E. Black died on February 11, 1988, at age 92. The Atlantic Spinners and Handweavers were bequeathed the collection of superbly woven textile samples from Key to Weaving along with research notes and correspondence.

The Guild approached the Public Archives of Nova Scotia with a request that they accept this material into their collection. The material required careful conservation which ASH provided with its own funds and donations from weavers around the world.

The conservation work began in 1993 and after almost 658 hours of volunteer time was completed in 1995. Brochure about conservation and collection

1995 – 25th Anniversary
The Guild celebrated its 25th anniversary with a dinner at the Inn on the Lake.

1995 – Show
A number of ASH members participated in a show of our work in Truro on October 16

1994 – Exhibition
As one of the activities in the “Year of the Weaving Arts”, an exhibition of members work was hosted by the Sign of the Whale in Yarmouth, September 16 – October 1

1994 – Exhibition
The Guild organized an exhibition of historic and contemporary textiles titled “Looking Back – Looking Forward” at the Dartmouth Heritage Museum. They also conducted workshops and demonstrations, July 23 – October 8

1994 – Spin-In
The Guild organized a spin-in at Scotia Square as one of the activities in the “Year of the Weaving Arts”, June 3

1994 – Exhibition
The Guild organized an exhibition titled “Consider the Lilies: Ecology in the Year of Weaving Arts” at the Mary E. Black Gallery, February 3 – March 26

1978 – Tapestry
A number of ASH members conceived and wove a tapestry called “Gulls at Dawn” for an exhibition titled “InsideNovaScotia Architectural Textiles for Interiors”. It was 30″ wide by 7′ long.
