Indigo is a natural dye derived from the leaves of various plants found all over the world. It has been used for thousands of years across Asia, Europe, and South and Central America. In this workshop, we will discuss the basics of making indigo dye baths, how to grow and process your own indigo, and shibori tie-dye techniques. Participants will get a chance to dye their own protein or cellulose based items in prepared indigo baths and experiment with shibori tie-dye. 


Equipment / Materials to Bring:

  • Scoured dyestuff (protein or cellulose) around 220 grams
  • Aprons/clothes that you don't mind being stained


Instructor will bring for class use:

  • Scouring Materials
  • For the dye:
    • Indigo Dye and dye bath ingredients (indigo, dextrose, calx)
    • Buckets
    • Gloves
  • For tie-dye:
    • Dowels
    • Elastic bands
    • String
    • Wooden squares 


Available for purchase:

  • Indigo dye bath ingredients
  • Small amount of cotton fabric

Coffee and tea will be available on site, but please remember to bring your lunch. A refrigerator is also available for us to use.

This registration fee is non-refundable. If a participant cancels or no shows, they forfeit the registration fee. If ASH cancels or postpones the workshop, the workshop fee will be applied as a credit on participants accounts for future workshops.
