A Little Silk Hankie Pankie!

  • This workshop registration comes with a bundle of 20g of silk hankies
  • You will bring your own silk hankies to the workshop.

This is introductory workshop about silk hankies (mawata) that will include a brief overview of silk, how silk hankies are made, and several ways to spin them. We will learn how to condition our hands for spinning silk, make some mawata, experiment with spinning and plying mawata, discuss how to dye mawata, and how to finish it.

 

Equipment / Materials to Bring:

  • A working, well lubricated spinning wheel with three half empty bobbins (they can be half full of any previously spun yarn
  • smallest whorl/pulley for your wheel
  • If you have a topical allergy to sugar, sesame, and/or olive oilbring your own hand cream that will exfoliate and smooth your hands. I will show you how to prepare something to prepare your hands for spinning silk.
  • 4 empty toilet rolls or shuttle bobbins for winding your samples on 
  • Lazy kate or homemade one from a shoe box
  • Small towel and a plastic zip lock bag
  • A swift if you have one (optional)
  • A towel that will drape over your swift
  • Pre-made silk hankies if you have them. If not, there will be some available to purchase at workshop in 20 gram bundles for $3.50
  • A small sized niddy noddy if you have one (under a yard)(optional)

 

Max number participants: 10

 

Coffee and tea will be available on site, but please remember to bring your lunch. A refrigerator is also available for us to use.
