Triaxial weaving is made with three strands of material rather than two, as in traditional weaving. The strands or strips of material intersect each other at 60 degree angles and no loom is necessary. It generally results in a sturdy, stable material whether it’s woven open with lots of space between strands, or closed and fabric-like. Because of this stability, triaxial weaves can be flat and 2D or formed into 3D structures to create baskets, spheres and other shapes. Additionally, colour and weave techniques can be used to bring out different patterns amongst the intersections. Participants will be guided through a couple of methods of building the weave using provided paper strips in various colours. We will cover 2D weaving in both open and closed format, become familiar with the different shapes/patterns created, explore 3D weaving techniques, and how colour and weave can be brought into things.
