Learn to dye using a hand painting technique in this workshop with Emily Gillies and Lorna Ash, where participants will learn how to dye both protein and cellulose fibres. In this workshop you will learn dye safety, colour mixing, colour planning, how to hand paint fibre, yarn, locks and a warp and how to set the dyes. Dyes and equipment will be available for use on site, however participants will need to provide their own fibre, and should bring both protein and cellulose fibre so they can learn the dyeing process for both fibre types. Additionally, our theme for the workshop will be “April Showers bring May flowers - botanical spring blooming flowers” and dyes will be provided in colours inspired by this theme.

Participants should bring:

  • Fibre separated into 100g units (locks, or roving or combed top)
  • Yarn in skeins up to 4oz
  • Warp chains in 2-3 inch sections - 40-50 ends of 2/8 cotton - whatever length
  • 4-5 plastic bags  you can transport your fibre home in, as it won’t have a chance to dry before you have to take it home.
  • Dish washing gloves
  • Apron - to protect your clothing (Please keep in mind you are working with dye and could get some on your clothing, so choose appropriate clothing
  • Wear close toed shoes

Estimated amount of fibre/yarn to bring: ~300g
You may get through that much, maybe less, maybe more. Feel free to bring more, but be aware you may not have the time to dye all of it.

Cost: $5/ person
