The April Hands-on workshop will introduce an ancient type of brocade for use on simple looms, especially tapestry looms, set up for plain weave. Brocades introduce a second weft for patterning, which can be woven across the whole width, or in discontinuous motifs. The basic technique is ingenious, efficient, and flexible. It has a very simple 3-shed system. It does not require a reed as it can be woven vertically like tapestry. Once the basic technique is learned, it can be applied to other loom set-ups, including rigid-heddle weaving.
Participants need to bring:
Materials:
All fibre materials can be sourced from your stash.
Main warp and weft can be ordinary cotton, or similar; brocade wefts can be wool, cotton or similar. A detailed list will be provided after registration.
Equipment:
- a simple tapestry loom or rigid heddle frame set-up with string heddles on a heddle bar
- dowels
- flat bars
- flat shuttles
- pick-up sticks or knitting needles
- a weaving sword
Homework
Please note that all participants must set up their looms for plain weaving in advance.
This is essential, so participants can concentrate on designing and weaving during the hands-on.
Due to the homework, registration will close April 17th.
After registering, participants will receive an email from Wendy with detailed instructions on setting up a warp on a loom with string heddles on a heddle bar, and suggestions for material choices.
